A Clinical Guide: Oral Diagnosis to Management of Worrisome Soft and Hard Tissue Lesions
Dr. Sahar Mirfarsi received her Doctor of Dental Surgery degree (DDS) from the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF). She completed her General Practice Residency (GPR) program at the VA in San Francisco. Besides private practice, she has served as an Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor at Herman Ostrow School of Dentistry of USC and a lecturer at UCLA in the Department of Oral Medicine and Orofacial Pain. She completed her Oral Medicine Residency at the University of Pennsylvania, School of Dental Medicine (UPENN). She is a Diplomate of the American Board of Oral Medicine. She is currently a full-time clinician and academician at the Western University of Health Sciences, College of Dental Medicine. Dr. Mirfarsi’s clinical expertise includes diagnosing and managing oral mucosal disorders, salivary gland dysfunction, orofacial pain, temporomandibular disorders, and oral complications related to chemoradiotherapy.
Course Description:
This is a 3-hour CE course designed to review and discuss oral potentially malignant lesions, oral
cancer, and hard tissue/jaw lesions found in our clinical practices. The focus will be on the red, white,
mixed oral mucosa and jaw lesions. In addition, the importance of early detection and treatment
modalities will be discussed through clinical cases.
Course objectives for Sahar Mirfarsi, DDS:
• Identify clinical features of oral potentially malignant and malignant lesions
• Review of lesions that can mimic OPML or malignancy, focusing on red, white, and mixed oral lesions
• Discuss the role of HPV infections in the oral cavity and prevention options
• Review the role of adjunct diagnostic tools in your everyday practice
• Review of clinical cases, differential diagnosis, and management options
Mark Mintline is an assistant professor at the Western University of Health Sciences College of Dental Medicine. He is the founding Laboratory Director of Western U Health Oral Pathology Laboratory. At Western U, he serves as the Co-Coordinator of the Advanced Oral Diagnostic Workgroup and Director of the Ryan White Part F Program. He is a member of the Los Angeles County Commission on HIV Standards and Best Practices Committee.
Dr. Mintline received his Doctor of Dental Surgery degree from the UCLA School of Dentistry. He completed his residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology at the University of Florida College of Dentistry.
Proliferative Verrucous Leukoplakia
This 60-minute lecture reviews the epidemiology, etiology, localization, clinical features, histopathology, and prognosis of proliferative verrucous leukoplakia. The lecture examines clinical cases, updated terminology, and the importance of establishing a clinicopathologic diagnosis. The lecture stresses clinical and microscopic mimics as well as the need for a close collaboration with clinicians and pathologists to establish an accurate diagnosis.
Learning objective 1: Review the microscopic characteristics of oral surface epithelial lesions including the terminology, etiology, and histology of proliferative verrucous leukoplakia
Learning objective 2: Review the epidemiology, etiology, clinical features, and prognosis of proliferative verrucous leukoplakia
Learning objective 3: Clinical photographs, collaboration with a pathologist, and close clinical follow up is essential for proper diagnosis and management of proliferative verrucous leukoplakia
Developmental Odontogenic Cysts and Tumors
Overall course summary: This 120-minute lecture reviews the clinical features, histopathology, and treatment of common developmental odontogenic cysts and benign odontogenic tumors. The two-part lecture offers case examples and reviews clinicopathologic features, differential diagnoses, treatment, and management of odontogenic lesions. The lecture stresses the importance of the dental professional’s role in detecting and differentiating developmental odontogenic cysts and benign odontogenic tumors.
